The Readback was a weekly narrative podcast from Barron’s that jumped into the past to explore why only a few of our most hyped companies and ideas end up meeting their promise. In 2022, The Readback was a finalist for the New York Festivals Radio Award for Narrative/Documentary Podcast.
In our most recent season, we turned our focus to the drive towards autonomous vehicles. For years, tech companies and industry experts have promised that fully functional self-driving cars were just a few years away, but figuring out how to make the technology work is only the beginning of the journey. We went under the hood to explore why innovation isn’t inevitable — and how it will require all of us to opt in for the ride.
In our second season, we explored the origins of 2020’s IPO explosion and why investors became obsessed with risky startups, regardless of profits. Even as Americans struggled, companies were going public in near record numbers. It was the best period for initial public offerings since the 1990s. By uprooting our lives, the pandemic opened the door for trying new things. And that included betting on all sorts of fresh ideas.
In our first season, we doubled down on the past, jumping further back to the archives of Barron’s to explore the forgotten histories of companies, ideas, and industries — and the lessons that are vital for our future.
